May, 2009
9th: Our first drum trip of the 2009 season saw mixed results. Bite hasn't turned on quite yet, but the outlook is good. We boated 2 drum, both on the smaller (30 lbs.) side.
11th: Recent weather front has slowed the bite down considerably. Rough day on the water, and no keepers.
16th: Whenever we need a catch, we should schedule a charter with Bill Shaw's group. As usual, they didn't disappoint, landing 15 drum! Mixed sizes still. Most fish are in the 40 - 50 lbs. range, but we weighed a beautiful 80 lbs. Drum caught by Bill himself, the pool winner. The bite was slow at the start, but as the sun banked in the sky, the action was considerably hot. A great trip all around.
22nd: Luke Welker's group never fails to disappoint, as they landed 14 nice drum. Sizes are still mixed, but larger fish seem to moving in more and more, with less and less pups. The bite was staeady all trip long shortly into the trip.
23rd: The Koch charter grabbed 9 nice Drum, more along the larger size. Had to pick through the trash fish pretty heavily, but results remained good.
29th: Today we fished with the Belfi Borthers charter. The bite has slowed considerably as more fish are in the spawning grounds, not feeding heavily. Usually the bite shuts down as the fish go through the process, but we still managed a catch of 5 Drum.
30th. Dave Steinmetz charter returned for their first trip of the season. Unfortuantely, the bite has been hit and miss over the past few days, but we managed to grab one large 70 lb class fish.
June, 2009
The Drum bite has been slow over the first week of June, as fish are spawning. Hopefully the bite will pick back up over the next few weeks, but it depends on the fish! We are currently preparing for the South Jersey Shark Tournament, June 12th - 14th, where John Seton will join us for a few days of fishing. John's an expert angler with the big ones!
As the offshore season approaches, look for early shots of good water through the next few weeks in June. Lst year, the early eddies that broke off from the deep provided some of the best Yellowfin fishing we saw all year. Also, many boats limited out on gaffer Dolphin time and again, as the pots and structures are filled at this time of the year, with little pressure on the fish. Any groups interested shoudl check with Captain Joe to see what the latest satellite images show.
Finally, due to client inquiry, we are going to try to run a few open boat offshore trips this year. If you are interested in some offshore action, but don't have 5 or 6 people and are looking to join another few individuals, please call us and we will try to schedule you with others.
12th- South Jersey Shark Tournament, Day 1: Fished South of Cape May in 66 - 68 degree water with several breaks. Lots of life, including some nice birdplays and reports of small tuna breaking water. Released 5 blue sharks, and killed one Mako, a little over 100 lbs. Slow morning bite, but afternoon was quite steady.
13th- South Jersey Shark Tournament, Day 2: Fished in similar area, only a few miles away with same good conditions. Much better drift than Day 1. We released 6 Blue sharks and 1 Dusky. We killed a 161 lbs Mako that we weighed, and alos released another small Mako. Good shark action!
20th- Fished our last Drum trip of the year, as the fish seem to be moving out. We were still able to catch two large fish, approximately 70-80 lbs.
27th- Had our first Tuna trip of the year, but the bite slowed considerably. We catch one small one, and one nice Mahi, which weighed in at 15 lbs 8 oz, setting the marina mark for the year. Tuna seem to be hitting the canyons though, and prospects look good.
Last week of June- The Flounder bite has been red hot recently, with some nice size fish being taken. We had 11 and 9 keepers the last two trips, all nice 20-inch class fish. It seems to be a 6 or 8-1 throwback to keeper ratio, which keeps the rods busy. Offshore, Tuna reports are quite good.
July, 2009
2nd- Flounder bite remains good, as we had some nice keepers for the trip, 9 in total. We also limited out trolling small blues, which seem to be very plantiful on the inshore shoals.
4th- We had a mixed bag of flunder & blues again, with good action throughout the day.
Offshore Report- Bluefin have bgun snapping inshore, with some nice fish being taken. Additionally, the Tuna bite in the Lindy has been quite good, with many small class yellowfin. The fish range in size, but some weighed in in the 40 lbs class. The action has been good, yet spotty at times. Many nice Mahi, some in the 20's lbs class have been takne while bluefin fishing as well. We've also got reports that yellows have moved into the Baltimore Canyon this past week, but we have not personally fished there as of yet.
11th- Ryan fished on another vessel in the Viking-Ocean, and grabbed 6 yellowfin, with the largest weighing in at 47.8 lbs. The offshore action remains quite good.
