Fishing Calendar
Different species bite the best at different times of the year. Not sure what's biting? Give us a call - we'll be happy to give you all the information we have to aid in the decision making process and steer you in the right direction
Typically, spring and early summer action includes wreck fishing, Stripers, Drum, Shark, and inshore species. Once the summer rolls in, we generally fish inshore, offshore for the early bite, shark, and focus on available species. Inshore trips are available all year - we can usually find targeted species close to home, just ask for details and the latest reports
From July on, the offshore action really heats up, and daytime canyon trips, Bluefin Tuna trolling, and Offshore overnighters start to fill up. I the early fall, overnighter action is the best and most desired trip.
In the late fall and entering winter, striper action is the hottest it can be - we've fished through the New Year!
Species Calendar
Drum - Typically caught during late April, May, and early June. Drum trips are generally 8 hours in length, and fished for in the Delaware Bay using freshly shucked clams.
Stripers - Typically caught in the early spring, starting in April, through May. Stripers will then migrate North and into the Back bay estuaries, and reappear in mid-October, and remain through November, December, and even January. Striper fishing can involve using fresh shucked clams, bunker, or live eels, and are fish for in the Ocean, Delaware Bay, and Cape May Rips. Trip styles and distances for stripers vary, but generally trips run 8 hours in length.
Sea Bass - Typically caught spring, summer, fall and winter. Sea bass lingering both inshore and offshore wrecks, artificial reefs, and ocean structure. Depending upon the time of the year, Sea bass can be fond close to shore or great distances from port. May trips are available for this species.
Mako & Other Shark Species - Shark fishing begins in the spring, usually in May and June. Certain species are available throughout the year, while others move constantly, as they prefer certain water temperatures. Therefore, we carefully chose our waters for these species, but can tell you what would offer you the most promising opportunity. Makos are also commonly caught in the Canyons at night on our overnighters, and provide some great action with their leaps. Yes, seeing something that big explode out of the water at night is awesome to say the least!
Flounder - Fished for throughout the summer months, flounder usually start to make their appearance in June through September. However, the flounder season is state-regulated. Flounder are targeted throughout the ocean and bay, and fished for while drifting with various baits. Several bottoms - sand, mussels beds, structure, artificial reefs - will hold this species, so methods vary. Flounder trips can be any length, and are fished for inshore.
Bluefish - Offering some of the best pound-to-fight ratio, bluefish are a favorite of many anglers - you simply can't beat the fight. Bluefish can be caught all summer long, and are fished for in a variety of ways in the inshore waters.
Bluefin Tuna - Typically the Bluefin will show up during mid to late June, and remain through September. Bluefin can be caught chunking, a method involving butterfish or scallop "guts," or on the troll using a variety of artificial and ballyhoo-rigged baits. Quite popular with our Daytime tuna trips, which are generally 12 hours in length and leave around 3 or 4 in the morning, and retiring 12 hours later.
Dolphin - Also called Mahi Mahi, or Dorado, Dolphin typically can be found when trolling in the offshore waters. Often hiding near forms of floating structure, Dolphin are one of the most beautiful fish when caught, due to their amazing jumps and vibrant colors. They are frequently caught in all offshore trips while trolling, but can also be targeted while drifting near structure, using live or artificial baits.
Yellowfin Tuna - One of the most sought after fish for many, Yellowfin Tuna are fished for usually in June, July, August, September, and October. Trips for Yellowfin can include Daytime Canyon Trolling and Overnighters, which give you the most fishing time for your money. Much like Bluefin, Yellowfin are caught trolling with artificial and ballyhoo-rigged baits, and are also fished for while chunking. Nighttime chunking, used on our overnighters, can be an especially effective, action-filled adventure, and truly something you must experience to appreciate and believe.
Swordfish - Generally speaking, swordfish are caught in our waters mostly at night while fishing for tuna. However, being the opportunists and optimists that we are, we usually utilize a deep line to target swords. They can typically be caught in the summer through early fall while fishing for tuna on overnighters.
White and Blue Marlin - These two billfish frequent our waters, and are found while trolling on the canyons. Generally caught in the summer and early fall, they are fished for using artificial and various live baits. When they hit, be ready for a wide, aerobatic adventure.
Interested in something you don't see? Well, that certainly doesn't mean we don't fish for it. These are the "frequently asked for" species, but many others also swim the waters of the Jersey Shore. If you are hopeful for something not mentioned above, just ask, we'll let you know the types of trips and chances available.
